What is Pain Management?

Pain is one of the most common tools in an ORC physicians’ practice for the treatment of a patient’s pain. There are a number of different medication types each with a unique purpose and method of providing relief for the patient. Medications can range from everyday over-the-counter items that patients will already be accustomed to taking all the way up to controlled narcotics given out only for the severe pain.

What is Chronic Pain?

Pain which lasts for more than 12 weeks is defined as “chronic”. Acute pain is a normal sensation which alerts us to a possible injury. Chronic pain is very different. Chronic pain persists often for months or even longer.

Pain especially chronic pain used to be something patients had to simply learn to live with. Pain Management also known as Pain Medicine draws on may disciplines in science and the healing arts to study pain its prevention evaluation, diagnosis, treatments as well as the rehabilitation of painful disorders.

When is chronic pain serious enough to call your doctor?

  • Your pain has lasted more than 3 months without a clear reason.
  • You are feeling down or blue or are not enjoying the activities or hobbies that you have enjoyed in the past. You may be experiencing depression, which commonly occurs along with chronic pain.
  • You are unable to sleep because of the pain.
  • You had an illness or injury that healed, but the pain has not gone away.
  • You have a family member or friend who appears to be suffering from chronic pain, and you would like information about treatment.
